Spotlight Artist: Lori Vliegen

Art to the 5th is thrilled to shine the spotlight on our talented member, Lori Vliegen!

Ladies...and Lori!  Here are her answers to our Spotlight Artist questions.

1. Name and state

My name is Lori Vliegen, and I'd like to thank the Art to the 5th gals for this opportunity to introduce myself!  I'm married to my little-Dutch-sweetie, and we currently travel back and forth between the northeast coast of Florida and the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina for his work.

2. What kinds of art do you do? What medium or craft did you start with?

I've been in love with letterforms since I was a little girl when my mom taught me how to write my name.  I can still remember the excitement I felt in school when it came time to practice our handwriting….other kids moaned, but I was giddy!  I've had wonderful opportunities to study with fabulous calligraphers over the past twenty years, and I still get that giddy feeling every time I put pen to paper.  Just like everything else, lettering requires a good foundation and lots of practice, so these days my art journals, along with my growing collection of favorite quotes, are a terrific lettering playground!

3. You are packing an art travel bag with your Top Five go-to items. Tell us what you choose.

1. moleskine watercolor journal

2. derwent inktense pencils + waterbrush

3. graphite pencils + eraser

4. micron and pitt artist pens

5. houndstooth reading glasses + chocolate stash

4. What is your latest product discovery?

I've been loving the white Sakura gelly roll pen.  It's been in my stash for a while, but it really came in handy when my uniball signo pen "developed a bad attitude" and decided not to work during the week 36 black-and-white challenge….gelly roll to the rescue!

5. Tell us about your work space.

I'm very blessed to have a large studio space above the garage at our house in Florida.  The natural light and sunshine streams through the windows every morning, and there's inspiration everywhere……it's one of my all-time favorite places to be!

6. What is one thing you MUST have when you create?

A {relatively} organized space, and a bar of good Belgian dark chocolate.

7. What do you wish you were better at?

oooh, boy…..that's a long list!  I feel like there's SO much yet to learn, but I'd love to be further along with my italic letterforms, my watercolor skills, and keeping Belgian chocolate smudges off of my journal pages.

8. What color(s) are you loving right now?

turquoise + sap green = love!

9. What is your favorite pen?

For journaling, I go back and forth between Sakura Micron pens and Faber-Castell Pitt pens…..I love the extra-fine tips for detailing!   For calligraphy, my Eagle Falcon nib is always my first choice.

10. Photograph your favorite pair of shoes.
